Event:

Breakfast with the guard who really was Mandela's friend

Description: Christo Brand is one of the former Robben Island prison warders that were tasked with looking after Nelson Mandela.  As we celebrate the Mandela Centenary, Brand joins the Chamber for breakfast, where he will invite us into the world of looking after one of the world's most famous prisoners; initially on Robben Island and later at Pollsmoor Prison when Madiba was transferred there in 1982.

What kind of a relationship grew between the two men, how did their engagement begin and how did it evolve as the country geared up for the elections in 1994.  What were the highs and lows of those decades.

Christo Brand was born on a farm in the Western Cape. He trained as a prison officer and found himself on Robben Island to guard the most dangerous men in South Africa at the age of 19.

Today Christo, still works on Robben Island. He runs the bookshop there and will patiently reminisce for the hundreds of thousands of visitors keen to know about his days with Mandela. Robben Island is now a World Heritage site dedicated to Mandela's life-long fight to liberate his people.

Christo is the co-authored of his book, Doing Life with Mandela: My Prisoner, My Friend (2014).

Please note that this event is free, but a voluntary donation towards the speaker will be most appreciated.
