Event:

Third Party Event - An Evening in the Company of History

Description: The creation of a multi-racial and democratic South Africa is one of the last century's most significant human achievements. This 18th July 2018, the world will celebrate Nelson Mandela's 100th birthday and the values of human dignity, compassion and ubuntu that he stood for.

Alongside him on the long path to freedom walked Andrew Mlangeni - an extraordinary person and Anti-Apartheid icon who himself spent 26 years in prison, 18 years of those in the cell next to Madiba. After freedom was won, he served 20 years as a Member of Parliament, retiring at the age of 89.

In 1964, Andrew had stood alongside Mandela in the dock - facing the death penalty - as Madiba said on behalf of all the accused:
"I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony. It is an ideal for which I hope to live for and to see realized. But, my lord, if it needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."

We are delighted to say that Andrew is coming to London to be awarded the Freedom of the City of London on the 17th July 2018. To make this possible, we are hosting a small dinner on the 19th July 2018 to pay for the costs of the trip.

We hope you will join us to celebrate and honour Andrew. It will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to hear about Andrew’s extraordinary life dedicated to freedom, behind the scenes stories of the trial, life on the Island and how democracy in South Africa was won; his insights into Mandela’s leadership and legacy; as well as what the future might hold for South Africa.

It will be a small dinner at the wonderful Ev Restaurant. There will be no fundraising on the night, but the tickets will make it possible for Andrew to receive his much deserved Freedom of the City of London. The Freedom, for obvious reasons, means the world to him and he means the world to us, so we hope you will be able to join us. It promises to be an unforgettable night.

Ticket - £110 includes a welcome drink, a three-course meal and half a bottle of wine.

Book your tickets here.

Any income beyond the costs of Andrew’s trip will be donated to the Andrew & June Mlangeni Foundation.
