Antony Phillipson: "The UK and South Africa: Opportunities and Challenges for a Modern Day Partnership"

Description: The South Africa Chamber of Commerce UK are very pleased to announce an in-person event with the UK's High Commissioner to South Africa, Antony Phillipson.

Antony will set out how the UK government aims to work bilaterally with SA, regionally and globally to address UK and SA objectives. 

Topics that will be covered include the climate challenge, inclusive economic growth, resilient health and human development, and the crucial role of the business communities in both countries.

Antony Phillipson has been the UK's High Commissioner to South Africa since September 2021, Before this role Antony was HM Trade Commissioner for North America, making him more than aptly positioned to promote further bilateral trade and engagement.

The UK and South Africa have a longstanding relationship rooted in a shared but complex history. The countries are partners in the Commonwealth, G20, UN, WTO and several other bodies.

The event will be held under Chatham House Rule. Antony and Jon will be happy to take questions.

Antony Phillipson, High Commissioner to South Africa.

Antony joined the Civil Service in 1993 and began his career in the Department of Trade and Industry where his posts included Private Secretary and then Principal Private Secretary to the Secretary of State (1996-2000).

After four years in the Embassy in Washington as First Secretary Trade Policy and then Counsellor, Global Issues (2000-2004), he returned to London as the Prime Minister's Private Secretary for Foreign Affairs (2004-2007).

He then moved to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as Head of the Iran Co-ordination Group (2007-2010).

In April 2011 he was appointed High Commissioner to Singapore, a post he held until April 2015 when he returned to London as Director (EU External) in the European and Global Issues Secretariat (EGIS) in the Cabinet Office.

After the EU referendum in June 2016 EGIS became the Department for Exiting the European Union. Antony served as Director, Trade and Partnerships in DExEU until November 2017 when he was appointed Consul General in New York and Her Majesty's Trade Commissioner for North America.

In June 2021 Antony was appointed High Commissioner-designate to South Africa. He took up his post in July 2021.

Jon Williams, Partner at PwC 

Jon Williams leads the PwC International Development Assistance practice across Africa. He was until recently the Advisory lead for PwC’s SA Local Government and South Market Cities practices.

Jon is a CIPFA member, and served 2 terms on CIPFA Council. He has more than 25 years of experience both within the Local Government industry itself (Westminster and Lambeth in the UK) and also consulting to the sector. Jon specializes in senior, public sector and ID strategic leadership and management and given his background in corporate services and financial management transformation.
