Event:

Pitch Battles: Sport, Racism and Resistance

Description: "There will be a black Springbok over my dead body" - Dr Danie Craven, President of the SA Rugby Board in 1969. #BlackLivesMatter protests and campaigns for gender equality highlight how systemic racism and inequality have for so long been inextricably intertwined with sport. In 1970, a campaign led by Peter Hain forced the unprecedented cancellation of the whites-only SA cricket tour of England.

Join The Herald and Nelson Mandela University's Canrad on Wednesday, 2 December at 17:00 as we unpack the book Pitch Battles authored by Peter Hain and Andre Odendaal, which tells the story of their ultimately successful struggles against sports apartheid, both in SA and internationally, and how it shines a light on modern inequalities in sport and society globally.

Date:  5:00pm to 6:30pm, Wed 2nd Dec 2020
