Webinar on the Upcoming Nigerian Elections

Description: Nigeria goes to the polls on 25 February in one of its most consequential elections since the end of its military rule 25 years ago. At stake is the fate of sub-Saharan Africa’s biggest economy and for many years its biggest oil producer.

Nigeria has enormous potential with a wealth of human capital.  Yet the challenges it faces are also daunting, ranging from high levels of poverty to security challenges from terrorists and criminal gangs.

To discuss the likely outcome of the election, the policies of the leading candidates and what the new government will have to do to boost investment and growth and to restore security, the SACC will be hosting an online discussion with some of the most insightful voices on Nigeria, Dr Tunde Odunuga and Cheta Nwanze. The conversation will be facilitated by Jonathan Rosenthal.

Dr Tunde Odunuga is a consultant data scientist and applied statistician with experience in machine learning and data assimilation techniques for highly complex and dimensional data, marketing and behavioral analytics, business intelligence techniques, and predictive analytics. He has a proven track record of working in government and fast-paced business environments.

He is currently a consultant data scientist and Intelligence Analyst at the Independent Monitoring Authority for the Citizen's Rights Agreements in the UK.

During the military regimes, he was a former youth leader in the affairs of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Lagos state chapter and was also a prominent member of a number of student and human rights organizations in Nigeria that advocated for the restoration of democratic rule in the country.

He's looking forward to a lively debate with the audience about Nigeria's upcoming elections.

Cheta Nwanze is the Lead Partner at SBM Intelligence, a Nigeria-based geopolitical intelligence and risk management firm, which provides intelligence and solutions to issues bordering on Nigeria, the Sahel, Africa and their relationship with the world. The firm's clients include technology startups, corporates, FMCG companies, media, multilateral organisations, investors, insurers and governments across Africa.

Before joining SBM Intelligence in 2013, Cheta worked in numerous Information Technology and Media organisations. Among them are the Daily Times of Nigeria, where he was managing editor, and Unilink Systems, UK.

Cheta is passionate about writing and maintains columns in Business Day, Financial Nigeria and the Guardian Nigeria. His OpEds have been published in various other Nigerian media and in Africa Is A Country, Al-Jazeera, The Guardian (UK), and the Mail and Guardian (South Africa).

Jonathan Rosenthal is The Economist‘s London-based Africa editor. He joined The Economist in 2005 as British business correspondent, having worked for several years at Bloomberg News in London and Johannesburg. Before that he was the mining editor of Business Report, a South African daily newspaper.

His previous roles at The Economist have included international banking editor, European business and finance correspondent, based in Berlin, and British business correspondent in London.

In January 2008, Jonathan won the Feature of the Year award at the WorkWorld Media Awards, and the following year he was named Reporter of the Year. He has appeared on television and radio in several countries including BBC News 24, Sky and on ITV’s “Tonight” programme, among others.

Jonathan has written several special reports for The Economist including three on international banking.
