Franceska Jordan – “Under the Boab Tree” – Hope and Love across two continents

Description: Under the Boab Tree, published in mid-November 2022, is more than just a memoir. Franceska Jordan’s involvement in human rights and support of those less fortunate stems from her mother — ‘an unsung hero’. Born in South Africa, Franceska tells of her mother, Isabella’s activism in standing up for human rights, as the growing apartheid stranglehold tore the country apart in the fifties and beyond. Isabella joined the trade union movement, much to her husband’s opposition. The domestic violence that followed in their home kept pace with the growing hatred around the country. Isabella could no longer tolerate the abuse of her and her daughters. Isabella was also banned for her anti-apartheid and trade union work and fled to avoid imprisonment in the late fifties.

They fled north, to Rhodesia, where Franceska was educated. Sadly, white supremacy was also on the rise in their new country. Once again, Isabella spoke out and laid the seeds of fighting against human rights violations that Franceska has embraced as the essence of her life’s work. Now living in Australia, Franceska is an internationally recognised counsellor, speaker, author, and healer. Franceska received the Australian Medal (AM) in the Order of Australia for her work with the aged, community care, disability, and mental health sectors. Franceska calls on being ‘able to seek joy in the saddest of places’. Her challenging childhood, extensive mainstream study and practice in psychological, emotional, neuropsychology, and group work, have all combined to drive her humanitarian work. This is especially relevant given the continued and ‘alarming assaults on women’s rights around the world’, as reported by Amnesty International in March 2022.

Under the Boab Tree takes the reader on a journey through the difficulties of loss and exile of two amazing women. It is about tenacity in the face of adversity, yet it is also about underpinning all with hope and love.
