Running your own business can be exciting, liberating and hugely rewarding, yet it can also be daunting, difficult, or just plain terrifying. The idea of being able to do something you love for a living, being your own boss and becoming the master of your own destiny can be very attractive. Yet, even if you’re well-versed in the specifics of your particular service or product, there’s still so many other things you need to learn for a business to be successful; business planning and cash-flows, marketing and sales, book-keeping, credit and risk management, acquiring premises and recruiting staff, scalability, education and training, to name a few.

There’s so much to learn, and in South Africa over 70% of businesses fail in their first five years, while the UK reports a failure rate of 60% in the first three years. SMMEs make up around 98% of all businesses, with a total of 2.5 million in South Africa and 6 million in the UK. South African SMMEs account for 60% of employment, and are responsible for 25% of job growth in the economy – so it’s not an overstatement to say that they are critical to economic transformation.
