SACC Breakfast with Mmusi Maimane - An Alternative Government in the Making

Description: Mmusi Maimane was elected as the Federal Leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) on 10 May 2015, at the Party’s 6th Elective Congress in Nelson Mandela Bay, in the Eastern Cape. Maimane also leads the party in Parliament, as the Leader of the Official Opposition.

Before being elected as Leader, he held the office of Deputy Federal Chairperson of the DA, from 2012 until May 2015. He was also formerly the National Spokesperson of the DA, from 2011 to 2014. His rise to national attention began in 2011, when he was elected to be the DA’s Johannesburg mayoral candidate in the 2011 Local Government Elections. In that election, Maimane helped to grow the party’s voter base from 27,19% in the 2006 election to 34.62% in 2011. Thereafter he served as Leader of the Official Opposition in Johannesburg City Council until May 2014. During the 2014 General Election, Maimane ran as the DA’s candidate for Premier in Gauteng. After a highly-contested election the party did not win the province, but this catapulted Maimane to national fame.

In the hotly contested election, which saw Maimane travel over 50,000-kilometres to every corner of Gauteng Province, he grew the Party’s support to 30,8%, from 21,86% in the 2009 General Election. Shortly after the election Maimane was elected to lead the DA’s 102 member Parliamentary Caucus.

Maimane is passionate about youth unemployment and the skills-shortage among black youth that resulted from the unequal education policies of Apartheid. He strongly believes that the route to reaching South Africa’s potential is through education, and growing the economy to create jobs and decrease the dependence and social grants. Broad-based unemployment in South Africa currently stands at 36.1%, with 66.2% of those unemployed being youth. He believes that in order to address this, government should prioritise access to quality education, and the growth of small businesses to allow young entrepreneurs to be brought into the economy.

Mmusi Maimane was born on 6 June 1980, at the Leratong Hospital, in Krugersdorp, Gauteng. He was raised in Dobsonville, Soweto. His mother, Ethel Maimane, is of Xhosa ancestry in the Sidloyi clan. His father, Simon Maimane, is of Tswana ancestry in the Baphokeng clan.

Maimane has three degrees: a Bachelors in Psychology from the University of South Africa (Unisa), a Masters in Public Administration from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), and a Masters in Theology from the University of Wales.

Maimane lives in Johannesburg with his wife, Natalie, who he married in 2005. They have two children – a daughter, KG (4), and a son, Daniel (2).
