Chamber Connects with Sophie Masipa: Communications Director for the Mo Ibrahim Foundation

Description:

Sophie Masipa is the Communications Director for the Mo Ibrahim Foundation. The Foundation was established in 2006 with a focus on the critical importance of leadership and governance in Africa. Sophie is responsible for communicating the Foundation’s activities in Africa and globally.

Sophie will be talking about the work of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation and Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG) and providing us with a high level overview of what we expect to see in the report.

The Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG) provides annual IIAG COUNTRY SCORES & RANKS assessment of the quality of governance in African countries. Compiled by combining over 100 variables from more than 30 independent African and global sources, the IIAG is the most comprehensive collection of data on African governance. It provides a framework for citizens, governments, institutions and the private sector to assess accurately the delivery of public goods and services, and policy outcomes, across the continent. It is both a tool to help determine and debate government performance and a decision-making instrument with which to govern.

The 2014 Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG) reveals discrepancies in governance performance between countries and within the four conceptual categories. More than ever, these discrepancies call for an Afro-realist approach, which tempers historical Afro-pessimism and current Afro-optimism. Anyone who wants a true grasp of African realities must reject the “one-size-fits-all” attitude which reduces the continent geographically or governance conceptually, in favour of a more granular approach. For this, the IIAG can be a very useful tool.

Prior to Mo Ibrahim Foundation, Sophie was the Founder and CEO of Fikira Consulting, a pan-African strategic brand and communications consultancy. She was responsible for driving the vision of the group and used her expertise in nation, city and municipality branding to drive strategic direction for nation and city brands across the continent. The consultancy, through its partnerships and footprint  in over 15 countries, also focussed on providing in-depth understanding of the African landscape to new entrants, devising strategies and outreach programmes for companies to position them in new markets. Her work included project and communication management on the 2012 Presidential Infrastructure Summit as well as the 2013 World Economic Forum on Africa working through the department of National Treasury in South Africa.
