Perception versus Reality – An Insurance Market Overview on South Africa’s Investor Risk Profile

Some of the current factors influencing South Africa’s risk profile include how South Africa's international relations are being affected by the country's relationship with BRICS and particularly with Russia. Internally, South Africa continues to face huge challenges with high rates of unemployment, poor economic growth, failing infrastructure and an intermittent energy supply. The upcoming elections present additional uncertainties, with the outcome of the elections and any resulting coalitions being hard to predict.

The Rand is volatile, affected by internal and global fluctuations, and the fall out of State Capture and continued concerns about corruption rumble on. Whilst there is a willingness amongst the business community to work with government to overcome the current challenges, and to ensure ethical conduct in business, ongoing events can easily and materially alter the risk perception of the country.

Our speakers will use examples from the insurance and risk mitigation industries to understand investor sentiment towards South Africa and what the future of investing might look like.

Craig Weitz, Principal, Nedbank

Craig is a Principal in Nedbank CIB’s African Infrastructure Finance business based in London. Craig has 13 years of investment banking experience and has worked extensively in the areas of sovereign lending, export credit finance, and credit & political risk insurance. With a passion for Africa, his recent work has contributed to developing infrastructure projects across West, East, and Southern Africa. He is also a regular speaker at international conferences and has spoken widely on the topic of African debt and risk mitigation solutions. Born in Johannesburg, Craig holds a BSc, BSc (Hons), MSc (Mathematics) from the University of Johannesburg.
