Event:

An Evening with Gary Kirsten & Bob Skinstad for the Gary Kirsten Foundation

Description: Cricket fans in London, England are set for an 'Evening with Gary Kirsten & Bob Skinstad' on July 6 at the Grange Hotel, St Paul’s in aid of the Gary Kirsten Foundation.

The event is in association with the South African Chamber of Commerce and is set to benefit the Gary Kirsten Foundation projects in the township schools of Khayelitsha in the Western Cape of South Africa.

The Gary Kirsten Foundation which was established just two years ago has grown immensely. In a short space of time it has established four 'cricket ecosystems' within township schools in Khayelitsha and has given aspiring young cricketers opportunities to play the game and receive coaching from GK Foundation coaches. Each cricket ecosystem consists of two newly constructed artificial cricket nets, a qualified GKF coach and a full compliment of cricket equipment for a range of player.

“The aim of the fundraising event in London is to shed light on the work we are currently doing, but also to generate interest in our biggest and most exciting project of developing the first ever artificial cricket field and indoor facility at a township school in South Africa.” GK Foundation Board Member, Madoda Mahlutshana said.

According to Mahlutshana who is the principal at Chris Hani High School, interest for the game has spiked over the last two years since the Gary Kirsten Foundation installed a cricket ‘ecosystem’ of artificial nets, equipment and a locally sourced coach. It has been inspiring to see the number of boys, girls, parents and teachers getting involved in these cricket ecosystems and it serves as a focal point for the surrounding community.

“There is so much potential in our township schools, and these projects are aimed at giving our pupils an opportunity to be exposed to cricket, receive quality coaching and most importantly to provide a heathy alternative to the youth in the townships,” he said.
