Event:

Brexit: No Divorce Payment? : SA Chamber Connects with Paul Hardy

Description:

Talk on Brexit by Paul Hardy, former EU Legal Advisor to the House of Lords whose recent work included the much publicised Lords Select Committee report in March on the UK's liability to pay into the EU budget after withdrawal. Paul is a leading EU lawyer with first-hand experience of working both in Brussels and Westminster.

Paul has recently joined DLA Piper as Brexit Director and is part of the firm's Global Trade and Government Affairs team. He was called to the bar by the Inner Temple in 1992 and has over 20 years' experience as a lawyer. He was a legal adviser in the European Commission for four years from 2004 to 2008.

He was appointed Counsel for European Legislation in 2009 in the House of Commons and EU Legal Adviser to the House of Lords in 2014.

Over the last eight years Paul has played a prominent role in advising Parliament on a full range of EU law and reviewing every piece of EU legislation and policy produced by the EU. Most recently his advice on the UK's liability to pay into the EU budget after withdrawal was published in a much publicised Lords Select Committee report. He has been involved in trade-related negotiations and has experience of negotiating EU partnerships and cooperation agreements with ASEAN countries.

Paul will talk about the journey of Brexit from the inside, his work on the legal consequences of the UK's 'divorce settlement', and how government is preparing for the negotiations. Paul will discuss what he foresees post the election and into the years ahead and how that will directly impact on the UK's ability to trade successfully internationally. Plenty of time has been allocated for questions.

EY has taken a neutral political stance and positive business approach to Brexit; supporting clients from across all areas of financial and non-financial markets. The event tonight is sponsored by Omar Ali, EY Managing Partner for UK Financial Services. Omar is responsible for leading a UK team of over 200 partners and 4000 staff at EY with responsibility for some of the firm's largest clients globally. Omar is a member of the EY UK Board and the executive board of EY's EMEIA financial services business.

Coordinating the event for Omar is their EMEIA Lead for Exchanges and FMI, Martin Watkins, who has run significant financial market infrastructures in London, Paris and Brussels. Martin joined EY in 2012 and will be known to a number of you from his attendance at previous SACC events.

Please note this will be a "closed" meeting of SACC members, invited guests and will be under the Chatham House Rule.
