Women In Solitary: Inside South Africa?s Female Resistance to Apartheid

Description: The SOAS Centre of African Studies and the SOAS School of Law, Gender and Media invite you on International Women's Day to discuss the book 'WOMEN IN SOLITARY: Inside South Africa’s Female Resistance to Apartheid' with author Shanthini Naidoo.

This is the true story of four women activists – Joyce Sikhakhane - Rankin, Rita Ndzanga, Shanthie Naidoo and Nondwe Mankahla – and their courageous refusal to testify in apartheid South Africa’s ‘Trial of 22’ in 1969, which included Winnie Mandela. Their brutal detention, the impact of their courage and their lives afterwards, partly in exile in the UK, is recalled in intimate interviews withauthor Shanthini Naidoo.
